New Bern, NC . . . The Southern Surprise

Nestled at the confluence of two of the South’s loveliest rivers, the namesake of Berne, Switzerland, surely qualifies as one of the most pleasant surprises in the South, if not the nation.  Although small – the metropolitan area numbers about 127,000 – New Bern has a surprisingly sophisticated manufacturing base (Bosch, Moen and Hatteras Yachts are major employers), a hospital with the services of a city many times larger (and soon-to-be-opened 100,000sq ft cancer center), a wealth of recreational opportunities, and a quality of life that is truly unique.

Founded in 1710, New Bern was the colonial capital of North Carolina and home to Tryon Palace and Gardens, and was the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola.  This charming city has long been a destination for tourists.  New Bern has a myriad of homes dating to the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries which have been lovingly restored to their previous grandeur.  Chrysanthemums blaze across the landscape in the fall, and the almost continuous splash of azaleas and dogwoods in the spring are breathtaking.

New Bern also attracts large numbers of retirees looking for a mild climate with which to enjoy the many outdoor recreational opportunities. Sailors and fishermen ply the waters in the Neuse River and nearby Pamlico Sound twelve months of the year.  The graceful Trent River is a water skier’s delight.  There are public, private and semi-private golf courses from which to choose in and surrounding New Bern.

Military, both active and retired, make New Bern their home because of its proximity to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.

Festivals and cultural events are practically perpetual. Just walking down the quaint tree-lined streets of New Bern is a great way to spend the day.   A warm welcome awaits those who come, whether they come for a day or a lifetime.  The only thing that isn’t surprising is the “southern hospitality” which is as present today as it was in the 18th century!

Coldwell Banker Willis-Smith invites you to discover New Bern and Eastern North Carolina. Plan to arrive early as the sun casts a shimmer on our rivers, bays and creeks…or at dusk when the water view is amazing when crossing the high-rise bridge to historic New Bern. You may even catch a glimpse of a sailboat slipping through the opening of the city’s drawbridge on its return to the marina or a dolphin out to play in the Neuse River. And as you approach Union Point, where the mighty Neuse River meets the tranquil Trent River, the glimmering lights of New Bern’s steepled skyline will draw you in.

So if you’re seeking that perfect area to relocate or retire with a mild four-season climate, then look no futher. With our waterfront properties, historical residences, golf communities, family-friendly neighborhoods and condo/townhome communities – you’re certain to find that perfect property to suit your lifestyle.

Homes here date to the early 1700s and represent a variety of architectural styles. Residents enjoy the convenience of downtown shopping, dining, coffee shops, art galleries and churches. Strolling along the tree-lined streets for events such as ArtWalk and MumFest or taking advantage of free symphony concerts on the lawn of Tryon Palace are just a few of the happenings downtown…not to mention New Bern’s Farmers Market, or simply quenching your thirst at the Pepsi Store.
